MANILA – Former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada is 99.9% sure of making another bid for the presidency after realizing that opposition unity is no longer possible, his spokesman said on Saturday.

Margaux Salcedo, Estrada’s spokesman, said at a forum that after Estrada talked to Senators Manuel Villar and Mar Roxas, it appears the two other opposition candidates are already bent on running for the presidency, which makes opposition unity in 2010 virtually impossible.

Salcedo said Estrada has been frustrated by efforts to unite and field a single candidate against the administration, which is why he [Estrada] is “99.9% sure to run.”

MANILA, Philippines – He has yet to feel the power of Manny Pacquiao, but Paulie Malignaggi is convinced the Filipino superstar can’t measure up against Puerto Rican icon Miguel Cotto when they tangle on November 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Malignaggi went as far as predicting that Cotto, who beat him by unanimous decision three years ago, would knock Pacquiao out and retain his World Boxing Organization welterweight crown.

In an interview with Rick Reeno of BoxingScene.com, Malignaggi paid tribute to Cotto’s strength by saying that he “hits like a beast.”

MIAMI (AFP) – - Ecuador’s Sandra Vinces, 19, and Iceland’s Ingibjorg Egilsdottir, 24, are early favorites on Facebook and other social networking sites ahead of Sunday’s Miss Universe contest.

Eighty-four contestants will parade in swimwear for the judges who this year include actors, TV producers, photographers, fashion critics and vintage supermodel Valeria Mazza.

In the run-up to the big event at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island, Panama’s Diana Broce won the prize for best national costume.

And the contest actually sparked a diplomatic kerfuffle.

RP in exclusive ePassport club

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines now belongs to the exclusive club of countries issuing ePassports, joining the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Japan.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo yesterday said the Philippines has improved its standard one level above the machine readable passport with the issuance of the state-of-the-art electronic passports.

The ePassport has an embedded microchip containing data essential in verifying the passport holder’s identity, including personal data, biometrics and digital signature.

“This chip is interoperable, that is to say, it can be read by any standard passport machine reader in border controls worldwide,” Romulo said.

El Shaddai leader Bro. Mike Velarde has revealed that he and former President Joseph Estrada have already agreed on the terms that would determine which of them would run as president in the 2010 elections.

In an exclusive interview with GMA News, Velarde said that he and Estrada had agreed that only one of them would seek the presidency and that the one who does not end up as the candidate would just support the other.

While Palace chooses to become quiet

MANILA – Former First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos on Thursday defended her nephew, Leyte 1st district Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, who is being criticized for paying the nearly P1 million bill for a dinner with President Arroyo and her party in the United States.

“You know, we’re talking about a dinner for a President for an anniversary, and in America, it’s double, triple the prices. And you cannot put them in the sidewalk for their anniversary. Maawa naman kayo, para ‘yon lang! Nakakahiya ‘yong pinag-aawayan. Doon sa Amerika, ‘di malaki iyon,” Marcos told ABS-CBN News’ Mario Dumaual in an exclusive interview.
