Too soon for Jackson funeral, father says

LOS ANGELES – Michael Jackson’s father said on Monday it was too soon to set a funeral date for the pop star, saying the family was waiting to hear details of a second, private autopsy on the self-styled King of Pop.

“We don’t have a time frame for that because I want to see how this autopsy is coming out,” Joe Jackson told reporters after a family meeting at the Jackson family’s home in suburban Los Angles.

Standing beside Joe Jackson outside the house — the site of a makeshift memorial of flowers and balloons — civil rights leader Al Sharpton said the family did not want to “rush into” plans to commemorate Jackson’s life and musical legacy.

Jacksons gain children as legal fight begins

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – – Michael Jackson’s family won temporary custody of the star’s children and applied for control of his estate Monday as the first shots were fired in the legal fight arising from the icon’s death.

A day after a family lawyer said the clan would seek custody of the singer’s three children, a judge named the star’s mother Katherine as temporary guardian after approving a petition filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.

In a separate filing, the family lodged a second petition seeking the right for Katherine to be named temporary administrator of their son’s estate.

‘Evil’ swindler Madoff jailed for 150 years

NEW YORK (AFP) – – Wall Street swindler Bernard Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in jail Monday for masterminding an “evil” multi-billion-dollar investment scam that cheated thousands of people around the world.

“It is the judgment of this court that Bernard Madoff should be sentenced to 150 years in jail,” Judge Denny Chin said, as he handed down the maximum term possible on 11 charges of fraud, theft and perjury.

He described Madoff’s crimes as “extraordinarily evil” and said it was “not merely a bloodless crime that takes place on paper but one that takes a staggering human toll.”

Peru’s sacred city added to World Heritage List

SEVILLE, Spain (Xinhua) — Peru’s Sacred City of Caral- Supe was added to the UNESCO’s (Unite Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage List yesterday.

The city, being the oldest center of civilization in the Americas with 5,000 years of history, is situated on a dry desert terrace overlooking the green valley of the Supe River. The 626- hectare archaeological site dates back to the Late Archaic Period of the Central Andes.

Exceptionally well-preserved, the site is impressive in design and architectural complexity, especially its monumental stone and earthen platform mounts and sunken circular courts.

Spokeswoman: doctor not suspect in Jackson death

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The cardiologist who was with Michael Jackson during the pop star’s final moments sat down with investigators for three hours to explain his actions, and his spokeswoman says he is not a suspect.

Dr. Conrad Murray, a physician with a tangled financial and personal history who was hired to accompany Jackson on his planned summer concert tour, reportedly performed CPR until paramedics arrived at Jackson’s rented home. The pop star was declared dead later at UCLA Medical Center.
