DOH confirms 4 more Pinoys with H1N1 flu

MANILA, Philippines – Four more Filipinos, including a one-year-old girl, were found infected with Influenza A(H1N1), bringing to six the total number of confirmed cases in the country, the Department of Health (DOH) announced yesterday.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said two of the four new cases – a 26-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man – contracted the virus from the Taiwanese mother and her five-year-old daughter who attended a wedding in Zambales last May 17.

Duque, however, stressed the new development is no cause for alarm.

“There is no need to panic. This is something that we have been preparing for,” Duque told a news conference.

Christian couple convicted for anti-Muslim booklets

SINGAPORE (AFP) – - A Christian Singaporean couple were found guilty of sedition on Thursday for distributing evangelical publications that cast Islam in a negative light, court officials said.

Ong Kian Cheong and his wife Dorothy Chan had been charged with distributing a seditious publication to two Muslims in October and March 2007 and sending a second such booklet to another Muslim in December that same year, a district court official told AFP.

The publications were found to have promoted feelings of ill-will and hostility between Christians and Muslims, the Straits Times said on its website.

North Korea threatens to attack South

SEOUL – North Korea, facing international sanction for this week’s nuclear test, threatened on Wednesday to attack the South after Seoul joined a U.S.-led initiative to check vessels suspected of carrying equipment for weapons of mass destruction.

The threat came after South Korean media reported Pyongyang had restarted a plant that makes weapons-grade plutonium.

U.S. President Barack Obama is working to form a united response to Monday’s nuclear test, widely denounced as a major threat to stability that violates U.N. resolutions and brings the reclusive North closer to having a reliable nuclear bomb.

Malaysia jails Singapore radical Mas Selamat

KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 – Malaysia’s government has imprisoned the suspected leader of a Singapore radical Islamist group linked to the 2002 Bali bombings, the country’s prime minister said on Wednesday.

Mas Selamat Kastari, who shot to fame when he escaped from a Singapore prison in February 2008, was caught in the southern Malaysian state of Johor on April 1.

Earlier state news agency Bernama said, citing unnamed sources, that he had been imprisoned for two years under Malaysia’s Internal Security Act, which allows imprisonment without trial.

‘Sexting’ no worse than spin-the-bottle: study

OTTAWA (AFP) – - Youths exchanging nude photos of themselves over cellphones, known as “sexting,” should not face child pornography charges, as some have in the United States, a humanities conference heard Tuesday.

Peter Cumming, an associate professor at York University in Toronto, presented a paper on children’s sexuality at the 78th Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences defending the practice as a modern variation on “playing doctor or spin-the-bottle.”

“Technology does change things, and there can be very serious consequences” Cumming said.

“But that obscures the fact that children and young people are sexual beings who have explored their sexuality in all times, and all cultures and all places.
