SEOUL (AFP) – - Unfazed by international anger at its second nuclear bomb test, a defiant North Korea was said Saturday to be preparing to launch a long-range missile.

The United States stressed it would not accept the North as a nuclear-armed state and warned that more atomic tests could spark an arms race in East Asia.

“A train carrying a long-range missile has been spotted at the weapons research centre near Pyongyang,” South Korea’s Yonhap news agency quoted an intelligence source as saying.

MOSCOW (AFP) – - A five-year-old girl Russian who was shut away with dogs and cats is adapting to normal life after being rescued and transferred to a clinic, doctors said Thursday.

The girl had apparently not been allowed outside the filthy apartment in Eastern Siberia where she had been found living with the animals, sparking comparisons with the character Mowgli from the “Jungle Book”.

“Everything is fine. Other medical tests will be carried out but she is in good health,” the director of the rehabilitation centre Tatyana Missnik told the RIA Novosti news agency.

MANILA (AFP) – One of the world’s rarest deer has been found in a tiny patch of Philippines forest that is being cut down by farmers and loggers, according to a British-Filipino scientific expedition.

The team said it “found fresh deer droppings, deer tracks and evidence of feeding activity” by the Visayan spotted deer during the group’s three-week sortie into Mount Mandalagan in the north of Negros island last month.

“This is a critically important find to discover such an important animal alive and well in its natural habitat,” expedition leader James Sawyer said in a statement released after the British members’ return to London.

MANILA, Philippines – Dr. Hayden Kho bared today that actress Katrina Halili supplied him illegal drugs at the time they were together.

“Katrina asked me to take drugs, [but] I didn’t want to take it at first,” he said.

Kho also told the Senate Committee on Youth, Women, and Family Relation that it was Halili who introduced him to illegal drugs.

MANILA, Philippines – Four more Filipinos, including a one-year-old girl, were found infected with Influenza A(H1N1), bringing to six the total number of confirmed cases in the country, the Department of Health (DOH) announced yesterday.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said two of the four new cases – a 26-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man – contracted the virus from the Taiwanese mother and her five-year-old daughter who attended a wedding in Zambales last May 17.

Duque, however, stressed the new development is no cause for alarm.

“There is no need to panic. This is something that we have been preparing for,” Duque told a news conference.

SINGAPORE (AFP) – - A Christian Singaporean couple were found guilty of sedition on Thursday for distributing evangelical publications that cast Islam in a negative light, court officials said.

Ong Kian Cheong and his wife Dorothy Chan had been charged with distributing a seditious publication to two Muslims in October and March 2007 and sending a second such booklet to another Muslim in December that same year, a district court official told AFP.

The publications were found to have promoted feelings of ill-will and hostility between Christians and Muslims, the Straits Times said on its website.
