All Victims in Amsterdam Plane Crash Identified

AMSTERDAM —  The bodies of nine people killed in the crash of a Turkish Airlines flight in the Netherlands have been formally identified, a Dutch mayor said Friday.

Theo Weterings of Haarlemmermeer said the five Turkish victims would be taken home as soon as further formalities and paperwork allow, while the U.S. Consulate was still deciding when to transport the bodies of the four Americans killed.

Of 135 people on the Boeing 737-800 that shattered into three pieces in a field shortly before it was due to land Wednesday morning, 63 remained hospitalized, one in critical condition, Weterings said.

Russia Slams State Department Report

MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday criticized a new U.S. State Department report on human rights as ”biased.”

The annual human rights report, released Wednesday, accused Russia of worsening human rights problems and criticized the Kremlin’s efforts to consolidate power by fashioning a compliant legislature through unfair elections.

”We hope Washington will correct its approaches in compiling such reports,” the Ministry said in a statement.

It said the report’s conclusions about the war last summer between Russia and Georgia were ”odious” and ”could not stand any criticism.”

US dispatches envoy for NKorea talks

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is sending her new envoy for North Korea policy to Asia early next week to work on reviving stalled international nuclear talks with an increasingly hostile Pyongyang.

The trip comes as North Korea threatens to punish anyone trying to disrupt a plan to conduct what the United States and South Korea believe may be a long-range missile test.

Clinton told reporters Thursday that Stephen Bosworth will travel to the capitals of four countries that have been working with Washington to get Pyongyang to give up its nuclear program – Japan, China, Russia and South Korea.

EU crisis summit will tackle protectionism fears

(BRUSSELS) – EU leaders will hold an extraordinary summit on Sunday, seeking to tackle rising fears over economic protectionism and agree more coordinated action to tackle the deepening recession.

The European Commission will champion a common EU approach on “toxic assets” held by banks and stricter monitoring of financial markets.

The meeting will be the first of two March EU summits in Brussels dedicated to the economic meltdown, as inflation and interest rates fall while unemployment rates and government bail-outs increase.

European consumer and business confidence was recorded at a record low in February.

Early reviews mixed for “Watchmen”

LONDON – The $120 million comic book adaptation “Watchmen,” one of 2009′s most eagerly awaited films, has had its world premiere in London, and reviews on Tuesday generally cast the movie as classy but no classic.

The red carpet launch late on Monday of the special effects-laden action thriller is the culmination of years of to-ing and fro-ing over scripts, budgets and, finally, a legal dispute between rival Hollywood studios.

Directed by Zack Snyder, whose “300″ was a box office winner in 2007, Watchmen is based on a 1986 comic book series of the same name written by Briton Alan Moore and illustrated by compatriot Dave Gibbons.
