BEIJING (AFP) – – China has delayed a plan requiring that all new computers come with a Chinese-made Internet filtering software programme, state media reported Tuesday, hours before it was to take effect.
China had planned to implement the controversial rule beginning Wednesday but it has been postponed, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
“The pre-installation was delayed as some computer producers said such a massive installation demanded extra time,” Xinhua said, quoting an unnamed ministry spokesman.
The spokesman did not give a new timetable for the software to be installed.

LOS ANGELES(AFP) – – At the height of his stardom, Michael Jackson shot to the top of the charts around the world with the sanguine message, “It don’t matter if you’re black or white.”
In his death, as in his life, the reality has been more gray.
Cultural institutions of Black America — from Harlem’s Apollo Theater to the Black Entertainment Television (BET) awards in Los Angeles — witnessed an outpouring of grief since the King of Pop died Thursday.

MORONI – An Airbus A310-300 from Yemen with 153 people on board, including 66 French nationals, crashed into the sea off the Indian Ocean archipelago of Comoros as it approached in bad weather early on Tuesday, officials said.
A doctor in the Comoros told Reuters a child had been plucked alive from the sea and was being taken to a medical centre. The manager of the international airport in Moroni said the child was five. He said five bodies had also been found.
The Paris airports authority said 66 French nationals were aboard the plane, which was flying the final leg of a trip from Paris and Marseille to Comoros via Yemen.
MANILA – The automation of the 2010 elections may not push through after the local partner of the winning consortium backed out of the joint venture project.
In an interview over the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) on Monday, Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chairman Jose Melo said “automation is now out of the question,” after Total Information Management (TIM), the local partner of Smartmatic, told him that they were no longer going into a joint venture with Smartmatic.
However, toward the end of the interview with ANC’s Tony Velasquez and Pia Hontiveros, Melo raised the possibility of Smartmatic entering into a partnership with the COMELEC for the 2010 automation project, but the contract would have to be finalized by July 10.

LOS ANGELES – Michael Jackson’s father said on Monday it was too soon to set a funeral date for the pop star, saying the family was waiting to hear details of a second, private autopsy on the self-styled King of Pop.
“We don’t have a time frame for that because I want to see how this autopsy is coming out,” Joe Jackson told reporters after a family meeting at the Jackson family’s home in suburban Los Angles.
Standing beside Joe Jackson outside the house — the site of a makeshift memorial of flowers and balloons — civil rights leader Al Sharpton said the family did not want to “rush into” plans to commemorate Jackson’s life and musical legacy.
LOS ANGELES (AFP) – – Michael Jackson’s family won temporary custody of the star’s children and applied for control of his estate Monday as the first shots were fired in the legal fight arising from the icon’s death.
A day after a family lawyer said the clan would seek custody of the singer’s three children, a judge named the star’s mother Katherine as temporary guardian after approving a petition filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.
In a separate filing, the family lodged a second petition seeking the right for Katherine to be named temporary administrator of their son’s estate.
NEW YORK (AFP) – – Wall Street swindler Bernard Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in jail Monday for masterminding an “evil” multi-billion-dollar investment scam that cheated thousands of people around the world.
“It is the judgment of this court that Bernard Madoff should be sentenced to 150 years in jail,” Judge Denny Chin said, as he handed down the maximum term possible on 11 charges of fraud, theft and perjury.
He described Madoff’s crimes as “extraordinarily evil” and said it was “not merely a bloodless crime that takes place on paper but one that takes a staggering human toll.”
